Dying to Try It

If you have been shopping recently or watched any home shopping network or visited any online shopping sites you know that tie dye is a big thing this season. Now you maybe thinking “I wore that in the 60s, I am not going to wear it now.” But since you are repurposing a lot of your work clothing, why not try repurposing some of your casual clothes into tie dye masterpieces.

For some reason, I decided that I wanted a tie dyed jacket but of course I didn’t want to pay a lot of money for it. So I finally found an inexpensive white one at Marshalls. I purchased a tie dye kit from Hobby Lobby and began my great experiment. While it was not exactly what I wanted, it turned out it matched numerous items in my closet. I was hooked.

I shopped my closet and found an old pair of white linen pants that fit perfectly. Since I hadn’t worn them in awhile, I decided to give them a tie dye makeover. They now have new life and I wore them immediately.

Then a friend mentioned reverse tie dye. So once again I shopped my closet and found an old black tee shirt. In fact I did not even realize it had some stains on it. Well the reverse tie dye took care of that. Once again the shirt has new life and I have something new to wear that fits me perfectly.

This certainly was a fun creative project to do that enabled me to use items from my closet. In fact it was so much fun when I had several girlfriends over for dinner, we had a tie dye party. The next day was filled with texts showcasing the “new clothes”.

There are plenty of videos that explain how to do tie dye but you can just read the instructions on your kit and you will get the idea. You have to be flexible because like my jacket, it may not be exactly what you want, but I can guarantee you will find something in your closet that matches it.

And it is going to be summer soon - a perfect time to wear tie dye. Just think of the pride you will feel when someone compliments your top and you say, “I made it.”

So shop your closet, put on those gloves and give your clothes a makeover! You will be glad you did.
