Celebrating Individuality
This weekend I attended a Major League Baseball game and noticed that one of the players was wearing two different colored shoes. So I asked my friend the reasoning behind it. Was it a political statement? A shout out to some nonprofit cause? “No”, she said. “Just a fashion thing like wearing two different colored socks”.
I didn’t think anymore of it until I met another friend for lunch on Monday. She was wearing two different colored earrings. Aha! I spot a trend emerging.
So as I was preparing for this blog, I read over several articles on the different shoe trend and the asymmetrical nature of it. Did you know that there is even a “National Two Different Colored Shoe Day”? It will be held on May 3, 2022. The premise is to celebrate diversity and your individuality.
So I decided to go through my shoes and see if I could try out this trend. Since I have several pairs of Vans and Sperrys I knew that finding two of the same shoes would not be a problem. I actually really liked the color combinations and decided I would give it a try. Since I am retired and don’t have to worry about people at work thinking that I am just a little bit (or a lot) crazy, I decided it would be the perfect time. The reactions were all very positive. Several people told me stories about their “mismatched” adventure and reiterated the point that it really is a creative fashion choice. And the people that probably had a different viewpoint had a good laugh.
Okay maybe you don’t want to embrace the trend to that extent, but I am sure you have one earring that doesn’t have a mate. Pair it with another one to create your own individual look. It is a great way to repurpose it and demonstrate your creativity and individuality. When winter comes you can try it with gloves. And of course there are socks! You can even try it with nail polish - doing one nail on each hand a totally different color.
It still maybe hard for you or you just don’t like being “mismatched”. You prefer your shoes to match and your earring to be balanced. That is okay. But you can, in the privacy of your home, just try mixing and matching to help you get your creative juices flowing or give you a good laugh. Remember fashion is supposed to be fun and you should not take any trend too seriously!
